She did not mean to get in. She meant to understand why she could.

She was thirteen. Her father, a German hardware engineer, had left a Debian machine running in his study — air-gapped from everything except a single internal network he used to share CAD files between his home office and his workshop two floors down. She had been watching him use it for weeks. The login prompt was not the obstacle. The obstacle was interesting.

She did not use a zero-day. She used the same technique Kevin Mitnick had proven decades earlier in Los Angeles — the human layer collapses first. She called her father's workshop on the internal line, told the assistant she was testing the system on her father's behalf, and asked him to read back the hostname on the screen. He did. She had her entry point in four minutes.

She did not touch anything. She mapped the filesystem, documented what she found, and left a single text file in the root directory: // sedona_was_here · no damage done · patch your social layer

Her father found it three days later. He did not ground her. He sat her down and opened a terminal. That was the beginning of the education. He taught her the difference between getting in and understanding why getting in was possible. Between access and knowledge. That distinction — still defines everything she does.

The prodigies before her had operated the same way. Jonathan James — known as c0mrade — was fifteen when he installed a backdoor in U.S. Department of Defense servers and pulled the source code controlling life support systems on the International Space Station. He did it because he wanted to know if he could. Mitnick hacked NORAD at sixteen. The pattern across all of them: curiosity first, consequences second. What separated the ones who built careers from the ones who built criminal records was the presence or absence of one word. Authorization.

Sedona chose the word. Every engagement since has been written, scoped, and signed. The skill is the same. The framework is different.

// OSINT · OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE · THE DISCIPLINE

Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) is the collection and analysis of publicly available information to produce actionable intelligence. No exploits. No unauthorized access. Everything in plain sight — if you know where to look. IBM defines it as a core discipline used by security professionals, national intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and journalists worldwide.

The term originated in military and intelligence communities. The CIA, GCHQ, and NATO all operate dedicated OSINT units. In cybersecurity it is the first phase of every professional engagement — understanding the target's surface before touching a single packet.

// DEFCON · VILLAGES · WHERE THE REAL LEARNING HAPPENS DEFCON.ORG →

DEF CON runs over 30 specialist villages — hands-on spaces where you can hack actual hardware, vehicles, voting machines, and industrial control systems. DEF CON 34 villages ↗ included Hardware Hacking, Car Hacking, Embedded Systems, IoT, ICS, Recon — every attack surface represented. This is where practitioners go, not just to watch talks, but to get their hands on real systems with real vulnerabilities in a legal, documented environment.
